Databases -- Library Lookups

"Vital Records From Chicago Newspapers"

Our Society has created a composite index to this seven-volume set of books which contain
genealogical data extracted from Chicago newspapers published from 1833 through 1848.
Lengthy articles such as obituaries and accident reports were abstracted. The events took
place in Cook County as well as many of the northern counties in Illinois. The online index
gives the following information: surname, 1st name, place, event, page number, year. The place
can be either where the event took place or where someone was from. The event can be
i.e. a marrriage, a death, a court action, etc.

Here is one example of an item on page 79 in the 1847 book, and the corresponding entries
in the database:

Watchman of the Prairies November 30, 1847. Died. On the 26th ult., of congestive fever,
at the residence of Mr. J. W. Hooker, in this city, Benjamin R. Dodge, aged 21 years, son of
Mr. Peter J. Dodge, of Perkins Grove, Bureau Co.

Dodge, Benjamin R. / Chicago / Death / 79 / 1847
Dodge, Peter J. / Perkins Grove, Bureau Co / Death / 79 / 1847
Hooker, J.W. / Chicago / Death / 79 / 1847
