Top security officials in the U.S. remain stumped after an unknown fleet of drones breached restricted military airspace for 17 straight days last December.

A new report, first detailed by the Wall Street Journal, says military personnel reported witnessing the mysterious fleet over a stretch of land at Langley Air Force Base along Virginia’s shore. The drones would appear in the sky about 45 minutes to an hour after sunset each night.

Former air force general Mark Kelly was first made aware of the drone sightings in December 2023, the outlet reports. They showed up for 17 consecutive days, with officials at the Pentagon suspecting they might have been deployed by Chinese or Russian agents to spy on the American military.

But because the drones did not pose an imminent threat, and officials at the time weren’t certain if they were being used for nefarious purposes or perhaps it was just wayward hobbyists, the military was prohibited from shooting them down, citing potential risks to troops and civilians.

The White House met with the Defense Department, the FBI and the Pentagon’s UFO office, as well as outside experts, to discuss what to do about the mystery formations, but several solutions, including shooting nets to catch the drones and using electronic signals to jam their navigation systems, also did not make the cut.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the phalanx of drones flew in a precise pattern along the same route each night.

Kelly described the first drone he saw as roughly 20 feet long and flying at more than 100 kilometres an hour, at an altitude of roughly 3,000 to 4,000 feet. Kelly said as many as a dozen more drones followed behind and said the drones looked like constellations in the night sky.

It was such an alarming breach that Langley officials cancelled their nighttime training missions and moved their F-22 fighter jets to another base.

According to Fox News, two months before the fleet emerged over Langley, five mysterious drones reportedly breached restricted airspace over a government nuclear weapons experiment site in Nevada.

The outlet reports that four of the drones were detected by the Energy Department’s Nevada National Security Site outside Las Vegas, while the fifth was spotted by employees. The Defense Department has yet to publicly state who is behind these drones.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) website, “reports of unmanned aircraft (UAS) sightings from pilots, citizens and law enforcement remain high.”

The FAA says it receives more than 100 UAS reports a month.

“The agency wants to send out a clear message that operating drones around airplanes, helicopters and airports is dangerous and illegal. Unauthorized operators may be subject to stiff fines and criminal charges, including possible jail time,” the website states, reminding drone operators to review the rules about where and when a drone is safe to fly.

From July to September of this year, the FAA recorded more than 400 UAS sightings.

This Diwali, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 clashes with Singham Again in the cinemas. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, director Anees Bazmee revealed the intriguing decision to film two climaxes for the much-anticipated third part starring Kartik Aaryan, Triptii Dimri, Vidya Balan and Madhuri Dixit. Bazmee shared that he kept the details of the plot tightly under wraps, disclosing minimal information to the cast.

Speaking to our publication, the filmmaker said, “We wanted to create two climaxes to keep everyone guessing. We didn’t want anything to be revealed. I didn’t want the climax to be spoiled. Usually, after the first show on the first day, everyone knows what the climax is. But I think people still enjoy watching the film and don’t want to spoil it for their friends and family. If they like the film, they’ll say, ‘No, no, you should go watch it.’ We don’t want to spoil that. I think that’s beautiful. And it’s the audience’s right. If they’ve paid so much money to watch the film and they’re giving us so much love, they should enjoy it.”

The filmmaker went onto reveal that the actors on the set weren’t aware of the fact that they were filming two different climaxes. “So, I didn’t reveal the story to many actors. I told some one thing, some another. And even the scriptwriters weren’t given the actual climax. We were shooting multiple climaxes. We were working, working, working. My God, you’d be wondering which climax was going to be the final one. They were confused from the very beginning. I wanted everyone else to be a little clueless. I wanted there to be an element of surprise. And in the film, itself, when the characters don’t know what’s going to happen next, it’s more fun. And the audience, too, would be guessing. Maybe, they had the wrong theories,” he continued.

He concluded, “So, all this fun was happening between us four or six people who knew the secret. And we shot it very secretly. The unit was huge, but we kept it very small. We confused people, told them lies, and had a lot of fun. After all, when you’re making a film, you should have fun, right? That’s why we spend 24 hours on it. If you’re not enjoying what you’re doing, then neither will those around you. I had a lot of fun with my team. We were joking, chatting, and enjoying ourselves.”

Directed by Anees Bazmee and initiated by Bhushan Kumar, the film gears up for a grand release this Diwali on November 1, 2024.

Sean “Diddy” Combs has again been hit with a slew of new lawsuits accusing him of sexual assault, including one claim alleging the hip-hop mogul molested a 16-year-old boy.

Combs, who has already been named in more than a dozen sexual assault lawsuits, was sued by six more people in Manhattan on Monday. The new filings claim Combs was abusive to the victims, who have not been named publicly, at various parties and industry events from 1995 to 2021.

Two of the six lawsuits centre around various “white parties” thrown by Combs, where guests dressed in all white clothing to celebrate the Fourth of July or Labour Day weekend at his home in the Hamptons.

One accuser said he was 16 at the time of a 1998 party, where Combs allegedly asked him to remove his pants and proceeded to touch the victim sexually, the Washington Post reported.

Combs told the teenager such conduct was a rite of passage for anyone attempting to break into the music industry, the filing states. The man, identified only as John Doe, said he complied out of fear and a hope Combs would help him secure a successful future.

The second White Party allegation comes from a man who said he was hired as security for the event in 2006. The anonymous accuser alleged he was served a drink laced with narcotics. While he was “extremely ill,” the man said Combs raped him in an open van.

In a statement, Combs’ lawyers denied any wrongdoing and said all of the lawsuits are “clear attempts to garner publicity.”

“In court, the truth will prevail: that Mr. Combs has never sexually assaulted anyone—adult or minor, man or woman,” his lawyers wrote.

The I’ll Be Missing You rapper is expected to be named in more than 100 additional lawsuits, according to lawyers who said their clients’ allegations range from sexual assault and rape to sex trafficking and violent behaviour. The latest lawsuits come from this same pool of filings, led by Texas-based lawyer Tony Buzbee.

Combs, his various business enterprises, the department store Macy’s and the hotel chain Marriott were named as co-defendants in the six new lawsuits.

One accuser said she was raped by Combs in 2004 after while filming the reality TV show Making the Band. She said Combs invited her and a friend to an “exclusive” after-party at a Marriott hotel. Upon their arrival, the lawsuit claims one of Combs’ staffers told the two women, “You know what you are here for.”

The unnamed woman said she was 19 when Combs “fondled, molested and ultimately raped” her in the hotel room.

Another accuser said Combs sexually assaulted him at Manhattan’s Macy’s flagship store in 2008. According to the lawsuit, Combs was there to promote his clothing line, Sean John, when he cornered the John Doe in the stockroom with three of his bodyguards in tow. The man, who worked for a rival fashion brand, said Combs forced him to perform oral sex as his staffers watched.

Combs allegedly threatened the man’s life if he were to tell anyone about the assault, the filing states. Other accusers said the same, claiming Combs threatened them.

The fifth lawsuit sees a woman accuse Combs of becoming physically violent and raping her at a party celebrating the release of Notorious B.I.G.’s One More Chance music video at Elks Plaza in New York City in 1995.

Most recently, one accuser said he believed he was served a laced drink at a party thrown by Combs in 2021. The man, who said he is a consultant working in the music industry, alleged Combs brought him to a backroom and raped him while he was impaired.

Combs has also denied the racketeering, sex trafficking and prostitution charges against him in an ongoing federal investigation.

Last week, the rapper and his lawyers accused federal authorities of leaking the video of Combs’ physical assault against his former girlfriend Cassie Ventura, among other information, to the press in an alleged attempt to deprive Combs of a fair jury trial.

Combs is still in custody and has repeatedly been denied bail. He was arrested last month.

Two judges have concluded that Combs would be a danger to the community if he is released. On Friday, an appeals court judge denied Combs’ immediate release from jail while a three-judge panel of the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals weighs his bail request. One judge deemed Combs a “serious flight risk.”

The robots appear to be turning on us, although not in the post-apocalyptic way we’ve long imagined.

Robot vacuum owners in multiple U.S. cities have reported their cleaning machines have been hacked, with one man reporting that his vacuum starting yelling racial slurs at him. A report from the Australian Broadcast Corporation pins a security flaw in the Chinese-made Ecovacs Deebot X2 on the hacks of the widely distributed machines.

Minnesota lawyer Daniel Swenson told the outlet he was watching TV with his family when he noticed something strange happening with his vacuum.

“It sounded like a broken-up radio signal or something,” he told the ABC. “You could hear snippets of maybe a voice.”

When he went to check his Ecovacs app, he could see a stranger messing around with its remote control feature and live camera.

He said he quickly reset his password and rebooted the vacuum before returning to the couch with his wife and teen son. That’s when the real trouble started, with a voice coming through the robot loud and clear.

“F— n——s!” the voice began shouting repeatedly.

TechCrunch reports that Ecovacs are apparently quite easy to hack and it’s been a known issue for quite some time.

An August report from the tech news website said cybersecurity researchers had been analyzing the brand’s security flaws and “found a number of issues that can be abused to hack the robots via Bluetooth and surreptitiously switch on microphones and cameras remotely.”

“Their security was really, really, really, really bad,” researcher Dennis Giese told TechCrunch at the time.

When the outlet reached out to the company for information, an Ecovacs spokesperson said that the company would not fix the flaws found by the researchers, saying that “users can rest assured that they do not need to worry excessively about this.”

According to the ABC report, this recent hacking spree, which took place in May, spanned a few days in multiple U.S. cities, although it is not known how many of the vacuums (which retail for close to C$2,000) have been affected.

Story continues below advertisement

The outlet reports that an Ecovacs chased a dog around a Los Angeles home and, five days later, another robot began hurling racial slurs at its owner in El Paso, Texas.

In a statement, Ecovacs said it found no evidence that any owner accounts were hacked and no signs of any breach of Ecovacs’ systems. However, researchers previously demonstrated how the four-digit PIN protecting the device could be bypassed, as it was only checked by the app rather than by the server or the robot.

Ecovacs issued a patch for this flaw, while ABC sources have said it was insufficient.

Nevertheless, the manufacturer has said that it will issue a security upgrade for the owners of the X2 series of robot vacuum cleaners in November.

On Thursday night, Tesla CEO Elon Musk set his sights on the future as his sleek, self-driving Cybercab drove through a staged city street at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, Calif. — but the flashy display wasn’t quite enough to truly woo investors.

The Cybercab, a robotaxi, is an autonomous, shiny, two-seater vehicle with double gull-wing doors and no steering wheel or pedals.

At Tesla’s invite-only “We, Robot” event, Musk estimated the consumer cost of a Tesla Cybercab would be about US$30,000 (C$41,250). The billionaire said the vehicle would “probably” be ready to purchase by 2027.

With the relatively low price tag, Musk said autonomous vehicles could be thought of as “individualized mass transit,” with a fuel cost of 20 U.S. cents a mile (12 U.S. cents a kilometre) over time.

The Cybercab’s charging will be inductive and does not require plugs, Musk advertised. (Inductive charging is wireless and uses electromagnetic induction to provide cordless electricity; for example, driving a car onto a charging station to fuel up.)

Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Oct. 10, 2024, unveiled the company’s new self-driving robotaxi, called Cybercab, which the billionaire said will be ready for consumer purchase by 2027 for about US$30,000 (C$41,250).

Tesla

Despite Musk’s ambitious promises and the positive reaction of the event crowd, investors’ reaction was lukewarm.

Tesla shares fell six per cent before the bell on Friday. The stock, which has been pummelled in recent years — much to do with fears of rival electric vehicle brands eating into Tesla’s market share — has bumped up nearly 50 per cent since April, when Musk announced the shift to robotaxis.

Still, Tesla shares are down eight per cent over the last year, compared with a 33 per cent increase in the broad-market S&P 500 index.

Musk said the company has already produced 21 Cybercabs.

At Thursday’s big-budget event, he also unveiled Tesla’s new Robovan, a self-driving bus-like vehicle that can transport 20 people or a surplus of goods.

Tesla’s newly unveiled autonomous Robovan can transport up to 20 passengers, CEO Elon Musk advertised.

Tesla

Musk imagined the Robovan being used to “solve for high density” transport, like ferrying an entire sports team.

He said the Robovan would also use inductive charging, but did not reveal when the vehicle would begin production, or how much one would cost.

“With autonomy, you get your time back,” Musk said.

He claimed his Cybercab would improve people’s lives by saving them time driving through traffic or looking for a parking spot.

“You can think of a car in the autonomous world being like a little lounge,” he said, adding that Tesla owners of the future could work, watch a movie or spend time on their phones, rather than drive attentively.

Beyond that, Musk boasted that self-driving cars would “save lives and prevent injuries.” He predicted autonomous vehicles would one day be 10 times safer than a human driver, but did not provide any additional information.

Musk did not specify where Tesla plans to produce its two new autonomous vehicle offerings.

He did, however, predict launching unsupervised full self-driving (FSD) in California and Texas in the company’s Model 3 and Model Y electric vehicles by next year. As of now, Tesla only offers a “supervised” version of FSD, which requires a human driver at the ready to steer or brake behind the wheel.

“You could fall asleep and wake up at your destination,” Musk said of full self-driving.

It is unclear if Tesla has already applied for or obtained proper permits to operate autonomous cars on public roads.

Story continues below advertisement

Beyond vehicles, Musk appeared excited to show off the company’s humanoid robots. A line of the robots, called Optimus, entered the event space on their own in a single-file line.

In an attempt to prove Optimus is not just a “canned video,” Musk told the crowd the Optimus robots, which served drinks during the event, will “walk among you.” He asked audience members to “be nice” to the robots.

Musk said Optimus could in the future be “something spectacular; something that anybody could own.”

He predicted an Optimus would one day cost “probably US$20,000 to $30,000, long term” (about C$27,500 to $41,250).

Tesla advertised Optimus as an “autonomous assistant” and “humanoid friend.”

“I think this will be the biggest product ever, of any kind,” Musk bragged.

Time will tell if Musk and Tesla are able to deliver on the ambitious promises made during Thursday’s flashy product launch. The company has in the past repeatedly missed deadlines set by Musk, including a 2015 claim that Tesla’s vehicle fleet would reach “full autonomy” within three years. In 2024, this is still not the case.

The Cybercab will be forced to compete with other autonomous vehicles, including the Alphabet-owned Waymo and other Chinese manufacturers. By pursuing a lower-cost technological path for Tesla’s self-driving vehicles, Musk believes the company will be able to scale up far quicker than rivals.

Tesla’s strategy is simpler and much cheaper than that of its rivals but has critical weaknesses. Chief among those is that the AI technology underpinning its self-driving system makes it nearly impossible to pinpoint why a crash or other failure occurred — something that could concern regulators.

Tesla’s rivals use similar AI and camera technology, but layer on so-called redundant systems and more expensive sensors as a safety precaution.

Shares of ride-hailing firms Uber and Lyft were up about four per cent in premarket action, in a sign that Musk’s announcements were not seen as a threat to the companies.
